2025 - 2026 AMS&NW GOVERNOR

Marilyn Bushell
Over 30 years ago, I was approached by a friend who was helping to form another Optimist Club in  Calgary, and after discovering what Optimist International was all about, I immediately said yes and thus
started my journey of “bringing out the best in youth, my community and myself.

February 10, 1994, I was installed as Charter 1st   Vice President of the Dinner Optimist Club of Calgary,

I have been Club President off and on for 15 years and have earned Distinguished Club President on 2 separate occasions.  My journey also includes serving as Club Secretary, Treasurer, Essay, and Oratorical Chairs. My club presented me with a Life Membership in 1997.

At the District level, I have held several offices: District Governor, District Secretary Treasurer, and Lieutenant Governor.

District Chairs include Essay, Oratorical, CCDHH, and Convention.
However, most of you know me as the District Curling Chair who is not afraid to wear a silly hat.

You ask why am I telling you all of this? If I hadn’t taken the opportunity to step up and serve both at the Club and District executive levels, I would not be the person I am today. I have made many friends in this organization, but, as an introvert, the one thing I am most grateful for is the personnel growth I have received along the way.

If you are presented an opportunity to serve the AMS&NW District in an executive role, whether it be at a Club level or District level, please take the opportunity. You won’t regret it!!
