PASSING OF OPTIMIST DIANE SWIATEK
Submitted by Optimist Club of Calgary, President Bill Campbell
With great sadness, I announce the sudden and unexpected death of Optimist Club of Calgary member Diane Swiatek.
I spoke to her husband Dan earlier this afternoon on the way back from an Optimist District Meeting in Medicine Hat and he confirmed the news to me, advising she passed away at their home on May 6, 2023 around 10:30 PM.
As everyone will know, Diane and Dan have been active members of our club since they joined in November of 1994. In addition to volunteering for club activities and attending social functions, she was a member of our Board of Directors and always offered thoughtful comments and suggestions during discussions.
One of her passions was education and developing young people to ensure they have the foundational skills to be successful in life. The charter school she founded a number of years ago, Banbury Crossroads School, was focused on self-directed learning methods that promote the development of lifelong learning skills, taking responsibility, and social competence. In addition, both she and Dan had a keen interest in helping others who were struggling, including inviting them into their home for a period of time until they could get on their feet.
I know we all pass along our deepest sympathies to Dan and their family as they deal with the grief of losing someone very important in their lives.
If you would like to extend your condolences to Dan, you can do so via email at [email protected] or by home phone at 403-240-1658. If you know of any previous members who would have known Diane, please forward this information
